Pictone Lugoae
(Caledonian Levies)

The Caledonians are a fierce people on the edge of the world. Beyond Caledonia stretches a great, empty ocean, and Caledonia itself is home to a rather isolated people. They are seemingly relics of a former era of Celtic history, they do not have great deals of iron, and so do not produce many swords. They instead fight with more practical weapons, spears, javelins, and slings. Balroae (Bal-ro-ee) are a vast number of men, of many ages and varying levels of experience. Seemingly fearless, and wild, their bodies are tattooed in esoteric spiral designs, their hair is spiked and red, and they are remarkably fearsome. They are very hardy and brave; their lifestyle demands it. Alone, a disciplined army would destroy them, but if incorporated into a more tactics minded commander, they may prove more useful.

During periods of strife and war, it is sometimes necessary to call upon ordinary citizens to organize as militia. Called Lugoae, militia in Celtic societies are farmers, craftsmen, fishermen, and so on, called to brief military service in periods of crisis. They may train a few times a year to fight, and games and sports encourage a decent level of physicality, but they're still only militia, and can only be trusted to do so much.

The Gaelaiche carry cheap equipment: Celtic longspears, javelins, and a shield. Their longspears are fair quality, with broad, sharp heads that cause deep, terrible gashes, and can be used to bring down horses as well. These weapons are accompanied by javelins thrown into an enemy position to disorient and kill a few foes. The Gaelaiche are mostly composed of the youngest Celtic warriors, but there is no shame in an older, experienced warrior fighting with a spear as well; the spear is a respected weapon in Celtic society.

(Elite Shield Bearers)

The Sparabara are recruited from full members of Persian society. They are trained from childhood to be soldiers, and when not called out to fight on campaigns in distant lands, they practice hunting on the vast plains of Persia.

These spearmen wear scale armour underneath their robes, and do not carry shields or helmets to encourage their comrades with their contempt for the enemy's attacks. Their lack of shields also gives them greater manoeuvrability to fire their bows. Having practiced on the hunt and in many wars, they are some of the deadliest archers in the world.

(Shield Bearers)

The Sparabara, meaning "shield bearers" in Persian, are usually the first to engage in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy. These soldiers are armoured in quilted linen and carry large rectangular wicker shields as a form of light manoeuvrable defence.

These poorly trained levy infantry are armed with a spear and a leather-covered wicker shield. Spearmen such as these are trained to form ordered ranks and to march in step. Grouping together bolsters morale and the shieldwall helps to neutralise arrows.

Eastern Spearmen
With a spear in one hand and a shield in the other, these men constitute the core melee component of most garrison forces. Whilst it would be a falsehood to number them amongst the professional soldiery, they are sworn to defend their homelands and are effective at performing delaying actions against enemy forces which have breached the outer fortifications.
