Native Archers

Des Égyptiens complémentaient les phalanges grecques de la dynastie ptolémaïque. Guerriers courageux et fiers, ils remplissaient divers rôles mais étaient le plus souvent utilisés comme peltastes, tirailleurs sur les flancs des phalanges, ou comme infanterie autre que phalange sur des reliefs plus escarpés. Bien que les Ptolémées adoptèrent les attributs des pharaons et leurs infrastructures religieuses, une forte agitation régnait toujours dans la population des autochtones, et ce, longtemps après la succession. C'était dû principalement à la manière dont les seigneurs grecs se servaient des traditions des pharaons pour remplir leurs coffres aux frais de la populace. Le gros des armées ptolémaïques était toujours grec jusqu'à la bataille de Raphia en 217 av. J.-C. où elles affrontèrent une force séleucide si grande que Ptolémée IV fut forcé d'incorporer 30 000 Égyptiens pour la première fois. Le besoin leva le doute qui planait sur les locaux désabusés. Leur performance au combat entraîna l'utilisation d'une plus forte proportion de troupes natives au sein de l'armée égyptienne et avec le temps, plus de rôles différents pour ces hommes à mesure qu'ils gagnèrent la confiance de leurs commandants grecs.
