Frondeurs égyptiens

Les frondeurs étaient des éléments ordinaires dans les armées antiques. La fronde était une des plus anciennes armes et était utilisée pendant la période paléolithique. En comparaison avec les arcs non composites, la fronde était plus facile à produire et offrait une meilleure portée.

Conçue à la partir de lin ou de chanvre tressé, elle comportait une poche dans laquelle le projectile était placé. Un côté disposait d'une boucle et l'autre d'un nœud ou d'une bande que l'on pouvait agripper fermement. Les frondeurs inséraient leur majeur dans la boucle et tenaient l'autre côté entre leur pouce et leur index. Ils faisaient tourner le projectile avant de le relâcher d'un mouvement du poignet. Rapide à tirer et à charger, la fronde était haïe par ses victimes.

Les projectiles variaient, de pierres ramassées dans des rivières à diverses formes en argile ou en plomb, ces dernières pouvant atteindre une distance de 400 mètres. De tels projectiles pouvaient porter des inscriptions : « attrape ! » ou « prends ça ! » Il était difficile de voir les projectiles en vol et même s'ils n'avaient pas la même force de pénétration que les flèches, ils pouvaient facilement casser un os ou enfoncer une armure à courte portée. Ainsi, le consul romain Paullus fut tué par un tir de fronde durant les premières minutes de la catastrophique bataille de Cannes.
