Javelots libyens

Le javelot fait partie des armes les plus anciennes qu'aient maniées les hommes. Les akontistai, psiloi armés de javelots, figurent parmi les meilleurs examples des troupes aux javelots de la Grèce antique. Équipés presque uniquement de leur arme, ils harcelaient leurs homologues ennemis et mitraillaient les phalanges hoplites avec leurs javelots avant de vite se retirer. C'était la tactique typique de toute troupe armée de javelots et sans armure : engager à portée puis se replier derrière une infanterie mieux équipée ; ou alors continuer d'attaquer tout en essayant de maintenir l'écart avec l'ennemi. Ce harcèlement à portée pouvait se montrer très efficace. En 391 av. J.-C., à la bataille de Lechaion, un force sparte qui manquait de tirailleurs ou de cavalerie en pâtit énormément lorsque les Athéniens armés de javelots refusèrent de la rencontrer en combat rapproché. Avec le temps, les boucliers devinrent plus communs, comme ceux dont se servaient les peltastes thraces et grecs, ou encore les vélites romains. À leur tour, ils furent ensuite remplacés par les thurephoroi helléniques et les réformes mariennes de la légion romaine. Cependant, des détenteurs de javelots et autres soldats irréguliers continuèrent à jouer un rôle dans beaucoup d'armées durant l'Antiquité.
