Greek Archers

Même si le tir à l'arc n'avait pas forcément la cote comme compétence militaire en Grèce, la Crète produisit d'excellents archers qui pouvaient vendre leurs services au plus offrant comme mercenaires. Tirant des flèches à pointe en bronze avec leurs arcs lourds, les archers crétois portaient aussi des boucliers, indication d'une certaine prouesse au combat en mêlée. C'est pourquoi ils devaient être une proposition alléchante pour un général à l'heure de recruter des mercenaires pour sa campagne. Leur heure de gloire arriva quand Alexandre le Grand recruta des Crétois directement dans son armée pour soutenir ses phalanges imbattables. Commandés par Cléarque, cinq cent Crétois accompagnèrent la phalange macédonienne à la bataille du Granique, compensant la supériorité numérique des Perses et donnant à Alexandre la victoire. Même si les Romains n'utilisaient pas traditionnellement les archers dans leurs forces, une fois la Grèce conquise, les archers crétois commencèrent à faire leur apparition en tant que troupes auxiliaires dans leurs armées. Plus particulièrement, ils combattirent lors de la campagne en Gaule de César contre Vercingétorix, lui faisant recruter les meilleurs archers des tribus pour s'aligner contre eux.
