Rorarii

Poor men are more likely to fight well when paid well in silver.

Rorarii' were lightly armed, early Republican units equipped with spears, javelins and light helmets, but without body armour. Like the heavier-armed and armoured Triarii veterans they most likely supported, rorarii were the army's reserves, only to be used in dire emergencies where both the hastati and principes had begun to waver. This three-line approach was the standard Roman formation until Gaius Marius' extensive military reforms during the 1st century BC, in which each soldier became an all-purpose 'legionary', with standardised state-issued equipment, training, pay and pension quickly transforming the Romans into the state-of-the-art super-soldiers of the ancient world.
