Hastati

Rome's first line infantry, eager to fight for the Republic.

Hastati' were the remnants of the old third class of the Roman army, under the Etruscan kings, when it was reformed by Marcus Furius Camillus. They were a class of infantry in early Republican armies; they originally fought as spearmen, but later became swordsmen. Hastati were Rome's staple infantry unit following its overthrow of Etruscan rule. Originally some of the youngest and poorest men in the Legion, they could afford only modest equipment and light chainmail armour. They fought in a 'quincunx' formation - five points arranged in a cross - and usually carried scuta, large rectangular shields, and wore light breastplates (known as 'heart protectors') and bronze helmets, often with a number of feathers fixed to the top to increase stature and indicate status.
