Medium Assault Raider - Nuragic Warriors

Able to withstand rough seas, these ships' crews can capture enemy vessels in any weather.

These swordsmen strike wherever and whenever their enemies least expect.

Most of the northern European tribes were not naval powers, but there were still able seafarers to be found amongst them. Shipbuilding techniques were well understood, so while many vessels were small leather-skinned boats for inland and inshore use, bigger sea-going vessels were also made. Shipwrights used heavy planking for hulls, stitched together and then fastened to a wooden skeleton to create sturdy craft able to cope with Atlantic conditions. Julius Caesar was surprised at the quality of the enemy ships when his fleet clashed with the Veneti from modern-day Brittany. The Veneti vessels had flat bottoms to cope with shallows, but were also of heavy oak construction to cope with rough seas. This made them tough opposition for Roman galleys, and capable of shrugging off a ramming attack. Caesar said that the enemy ships "...were constructed of planks a foot in breadth, fastened by iron spikes the thickness of a man's thumb; the anchors were secured fast by iron chains instead of cables”. When the Romans were forced to board, they faced fearsome warriors used to close-quarters fighting at sea.

(Nuragic Warriors)
Many bronze statues found in Sardinia, as well as the stone giants of Monte Prama, depict ancient warriors carrying large shields and a leather sheath, covering their entire right arm and ending in something resembling a club or similar blunt weapon. Many believe the statues to be Nuragic warriors, descendants of the ancient 'Sea People', a loose confederation of clans who fought the Aegean Greeks and Egypt during the Bronze Age. At the time, chariots were often used in combat, mostly to hold transport archers around the battlefield. The Nuragic warriors' purpose was to defeat these tactics by attacking the chariots with massed archers to pin them down and hold them in place. While immobile, the charioteers were vulnerable to attack by the swift Sardinians, called 'pugilatore' or 'boxers' - the Latin root of the English word 'pugilist', meaning 'fighter'; their large shields enabled them to protect themselves from enemy arrows and knock charioteers from their mounts with their glove-like weapons. The Sardinian tribes maintained this tradition, with boxers being part of Nuragic ritual combat as both a form of religious expression and entertainment.
