Tervingi Warriors

Respected by their fellow tribesmen, feared by everyone else.

The Gothi were not a single tribe, but a confederation of Germanic warrior bands united under a single leader. During Aurelian's reign as Rome's Emperor, his forces pursued the Gothi into their territory north of the Danube and won many engagements, earning the title 'Gothicus Maximus'. After losing 5000 warriors and their king, Cannabas-Cannabaudes, the Gothi retreated north of the Danube river. In AD 291, two decades after their catastrophic loss to the Romans, the Gothi divided into two factions along tribal lines at the Dniester river, with the Greutungi and Tervingi and tribes heading east and west respectively. The Tervingi, also known as forest people, later became the Visigoths, while Greutungi became known as the Ostrogoths.
