Obwohl Bogenschießen als militärische Fähigkeit in Griechenland nicht hoch geschätzt wurde, brachte Kreta wahrlich großartige Bogenschützen hervor, die sich dem Höchstbietenden als Söldner zur Verfügung stellten. Sie verschossen Pfeile mit Bronzespitzen mit Primitivbogen und trugen für gewöhnlich Schilde, was auf weitere Nahkampffähigkeiten schließen lässt. Somit waren sie attraktiv für einen General, der Söldner für seine Kampagne suchte. Ihren größten Erfolg verzeichneten sie, als Alexander der Große die Kreter in seine Armee aufnahm, um seine unbesiegbare Phalanx zu unterstützen. 500 von Klearchos kommandierte Kreter begleiteten die makedonische Phalanx bei Granikos in die Schlacht und überwarfen damit die zahlenmäßige Überlegenheit der Perser und ermöglichten Alexanders folgenden Sieg. Auch wenn die Römer traditionell keine Bogenschützen in ihren Streitkräften hatten, erschienen nach der Eroberung Griechenlands kretische Bogenschützen als Auxiliartruppen in ihren Armeen. Sie kämpften in Cäsars Kampagne in Gallien gegen Vercingetorix und brachten ihn dazu, die besten Bogenschützen, die er zu bieten hatte, gegen sie aufzufahren.
