Mastery of Terrain

From the early days of the Republic to the fall of the Empire, some tribes proved themselves well able to defeat superior Roman armies by using ambush tactics and knowledge of the terrain of their homelands to their advantage. Battles like the ‘Caudine Forks’, Carrhae and later Teutoburg Forest soon taught the Romans to respect the military prowess of foes they previously considered little more than trivial to defeat.
