Local Knowledge

"I know a faster way across this mountain, friend..."

Although the Roman Legions were feared as a terrifying fighting force, there were many other elements that gave the Republic its advantage on the battlefield. A superior knowledge of terrain and local information often gave Rome an edge against its enemies. Intelligence from spies and allies ahead of an army's position brought Roman victory on more than one occasion. During the middle of the Second Punic War, intelligence was intercepted, revealing that Hasdrubal was attempting to reach Hannibal to reinforce his dwindling army. Rome used this information to anticipate and intercept him, disrupting Carthaginian plans, ultimately shortening the war.
