We are a proud people, but not unwise. We keep our traditions close to heart, but are also able to appreciate others’ achievements. The Etruscans, for instance, have been our neighbours for a long time. Their culture is sophisticated and enlightened, but some aspects of their worldview appear strange to us. In other respects, such as trade, art and craftsmanship, however, they excel. Naturally, we are happy to borrow some of their better ideas.
