The Example of the Horatii

During the times of the kings, Roma was at war with her neighbour, Alba Longa. The two sides decided to settle the conflict through a fight to the death between their bravest champions. The Horatii triplets were chosen to defend Roma's honour and the Curiatii triplets fought for Alba Longa. They met on the battlefield before their two armies. In the furious battle that followed, two of the Romans were killed and all the Albans were wounded. The last Horatii standing, Publius, ran across the battlefield, pursued by the Curiatii who, having different injuries, ran at different speeds. Publius managed to separate them in such a manner that he fought each one individually and defeated them. Following this victory, the Albans honoured the treaty and accepted Roman rule.
