Royal Bazaars

The bazaar was the throbbing heart of the eastern city, bustling with activity day and night as services and goods were constantly traded for their equivalent in gold and silver. During the rule of the Sassanids, bazaars also accommodated craftsmen and artisans alongside simple vendors. The craftsmen and artisans either worked individually or applied for membership of guilds. Each guild was led by a master craftsman of singular skills whose duty it was to coordinate the work of its members. Above the guilds stood the 'Wazarbed' or head of the bazaar - a representative of royal authority that supervised the general activity of the marketplace.
