Mustered Infantry

Although many barbarian tribes favoured ambush and shock tactics, there were some who developed techniques especially for use in pitched battles. The Germanic tribes, for instance, favoured columns, and when warriors from different tribes fought together each tribe formed its own column. This not only allowed tribes to fight in their own styles - using their own chants and war dances - but created rivalry on the battlefield, encouraging tribes to prove their fighting prowess to their neighbours.
