Levied Troops

Sassanid soldiers were recruited from various sources. At the bottom were the units of light infantry, poorly equipped and lacking in training. Then there were the more quality troops provided by landowners, governors or allied nations. The majority of the horse archers comprised of petty nobles and sometimes nomad mercenaries. The ranks of elite heavy horsemen, however, were filled by members of important noble clans and families – those who could afford steeds and equipment and the time to train in their use.
