Royal Bazaars

After a period of civil war, the Sassanid Dynasty overthrew Parthians and in 224 Ardashir was crowned as the first Sassanid ruler of Persia. He stabilized his power by quelling local rebellions and expanding his realm. As the dust settled it became apparent that the new empire needed the support of a bureaucratic system complex enough to cater to the needs of the Shahanshah and his subjects. Provincial governors, counsellors, judges, accountants, simple scribes – the administration required all these offices to be filled up by people who were as diligent as they were loyal. Zoroastrian priests seem to have played a special and prominent role in the administrative hierarchy as evidenced by discovered seals dating from Sassanid times.
