Zoroastrian Tenets
The words of the ancient prophet will never be forgotten.According to tradition, the prophet Zoroaster received twenty-one books, created by the deity Ahura Mazda himself. The books formed the Zoroastrian holy scripture, the Avesta. As the Achaemenid dynasty of ancient Persia adopted Zoroastrianism, the Avesta came to be housed in a library at Persepolis, written with golden ink on parchments and leather sheets. However, Alexander the Great put Persepolis to the torch in 330 BC and the sacred texts were lost. Centuries later, the Sassanids restored the Avesta by piecing together fragments of the original text and filling in the blanks with oral traditions. Such a magnificent feat probably took years to accomplish yet it became a spiritual monument to the Sassanids’ devotion to Zoroastrianism.
