Caravanserai

A palace for caravans, a safe haven for their owners.

Caravanserais are inns located along the most important trade routes of the Achaemenid Royal Road, an ancient highway that stretched from Sardis to Susa, where travellers could rest and recover from their long journeys. Typically, a caravanserai was a building with a square or rectangular walled exterior, with a single wide portal to permit large carriages to enter. The courtyard was almost always open to the sky and its inner walls were outfitted with stalls, bays, niches and chambers to accommodate the merchants, their animals and merchandise. As well as providing a safe place to rest, Caravanserais supported the flow of commerce, culture and information from Asia and Africa into southeastern Europe.
