Mithraic Community"Tonight a new soul enters the mysteries of Mithras. Arise, Corax, and embrace your brothers."
Mithraism was a mystery cult popular throughout the Roman Empire from the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD. It drew heavily on influences from eastern belief-systems, where 'Mithra' was the Zoroastrian deity of Covenant and Oath, among other divine responsibilities. Being a mystery cult, Mithraism's secrets were revealed only to the select few, which meant that very little information has survived and even that is fragmentary at best. It is known, however, that Mithraic rituals were conducted in underground temples known as 'mithraea' and that a shared festive meal was a part of the rites. 'Mithras' - the Roman interpretation of Mithra - was often depicted carousing with a solar deity, possibly the Roman god Sol Invictus, or ritually slaying a bull. To this day, no one has been able to ascertain exactly what this symbolism represents. Mithraism's 'system of seven degrees' was a hierarchy through which devotees ascended, each level bearing a symbolic name like 'raven' or 'sun runner' - again, we are still unsure what each level represented. Why is Mithras often depicted slaying a bull? What exactly does the statuette of a naked man with the head of a lion depict? Each question produces a multitude of further questions and the truth is lost to time forever.
