Military Compound

An army needs weapons as well as warm bodies.

Although their military forces were strong and well organised, the Etruscans were not especially warlike people, and their campaigns were mainly used as an economic tool to enforce trade agreements. As they gradually evolved from a warrior aristocracy into an oligarchical society, Etruscan soldiers became closely bound to the ruling class. In the event of war, Etruscan aristocrats travelled around their estates and ‘tular’ (territory, frontier) to mobilised their clients and muster troops.
