Flock of Sheep

Allowed to graze freely, sheep provide good meat and wool.

For the most part, the Samnite economy was based on agriculture. Unfortunately, it was their lack of interest in commerce that allowed the Romans to pull so far ahead of the Samnites in terms of wealth, and ultimately power. With everyone using the land for subsistence, and few big landowners making enormous, taxable profits, the Samnites just weren’t able to rise to the same heights. It was this, among other aspects of their culture, which made the Romans view their neighbours as rather backwards and uncivilised by comparison.
