Shrine of Sol Invictus
"Raise your eyes to the sun above and receive its blessing."The Romans worshipped the sun from their earliest days, long before the Republic, when Rome was still ruled by kings. The practise became more prominent from AD 218, when Emperor Elagabalus ascended to the throne. In his youth, he had served as a priest to the eastern cult of the solar deity Elagabal, worshipped in the city of Emesa. His reign was marked by a desire to promote his patron god within the Roman pantheon. Historians describe Elagabalus as cruel in his eccentricity and a true tyrant at times which urged his Praetorians Guard to take his life. Nevertheless, the cult of Sol Invictus, as the god Elagabal came to be known in Rome, was born. About fifty years later, Emperor Aurelian realized the unifying effect a common religion might have on the populace and adopted Sol Invictus as the chief Roman deity.
