Castrum Stativum

The legion is a finely-tuned machine for making war anywhere at any time.

During its many conquests, the Roman army relied heavily on the ability to swiftly plan and construct camps for the shelter and protection of its soldiers while on the march. Since tribal barbarians never attempted to duplicate this degree of organisation, the Romans enjoyed the significant advantage of fielding armies that were better rested due to their fortified encampments. A camp's location was first carefully chosen, keeping important details such as defensibility and easy access to water in mind. Then, a special team of surveyors marked the layout, before finally the Legionaries erected the fortifications and pitched the tents. While some camps were temporary, abandoned by a Legion who was moving on, others were constantly garrisoned due to the strategic importance of their location. These were named 'castra stativa', meaning - unsurprisingly - 'permanent camp'; their fortifications were gradually augmented until they became imposing, formidable fortresses in their own right.
