Port of Massalia

A vital port used for all purposes.

All states built their navies to safeguard their merchants' vital trade across the Mediterranean. The Carthaginians were the most daring seafarers of the ancient world, preferring to hire mercenaries for their land wars whilst concentrating on the construction of a huge fleet of ever-larger ships. As Carthaginian trade and the need to transport troops increased, so did the importance of sea control. They built vast war galleys manned by citizen rowers. Alongside Greek-style triremes, quinqueremes ('fives') and septiremes ('sevens'), reinforced for ramming, were constructed. Even so, the largest ship of the ancient world was the Syracusia, designed by Archimedes and built in 240BC by King Hiero II. It used some sixty times the resources needed for an average trireme and took 300 skilled workmen over a year to build.

Often called a liburnia in later Roman fleets, these swift yet durable warships are excellent for boarding actions and coastal patrols. (Levy Spearmen) These poorly trained levy infantry are supplied by the great nobles (Azats) from their estates in the more settled regions of the empire. They are armed with a spear and a leather-covered wicker shield. Though they are ill-disciplined, these spearmen are capable of fighting in ordered ranks.

2	80	Medium Ship / Melee Ship / (Eas_Assault_Trireme) Trieres - Nizagan A trireme is a 37 meter long oared warship (galley) with three decks of oars, developed from the bireme in the 5th century BCE. Popular with Carthaginian, Greek and Roman navies, this is the main warship of the classical age. (Levy Spearmen) These poorly trained levy infantry are supplied by the great nobles (Azats) from their estates in the more settled regions of the empire. Developed by the Rhodians, it has been their favoured ship design for centuries and is an ideal pirate hunter, able to keep up with lighter raiding ships. 4	80	Light Ship / Missile Ship / (Eas_Raiding_Hemolia) Raiding Hemiolia - Zubindar-i Payahdag A hemiolia is a light and fast raiding ship developed in the 4th century BCE, favoured by pirates but also used by navies as a light patrol ship. It has one and a half rows of oars, making it faster and more powerful than earlier uniremes. (Iranian Foot Archers) Weight of numbers brings its own quality to arrow fire from eastern archers.

5	100	Light Ship / Transport Ship / (Supply_Ship_Eastern) Supply Ship - Supply Crew These merchant ships can carry vast amounts of supplies, and are the best solution to supply forces operating on land. A fleet with a supply ship can supply nearby land forces until the fleet runs out of supplies. Supply lines by sea are generally less expensive than those on land.
