Fish Market

Once dried and salted, fish can be traded far and wide.

Fish were a staple of many ancient diets, and methods of fishing have changed relatively little over the centuries since then. Spearfishing, hook-and-line and nets date back to the Stone Age, and could support large communities. Cast nets were commonly used at coastal outcrops. Circular in shape, they were weighted with stones around the edge, and had a drawstring that allowed the full net to be closed and hauled in. A complete contrast, in terms of effort expended, was trapping: common types included woven baskets or nets for seafood, or fish weirs that made use of tidal and river currents.

Assault Dieres - Machimoi Epibatoi
A bireme is a 30 meter long oared warship (galley) with two decks of oars, thought to have been invented by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BCE. Often called a liburnia in later Roman fleets, these swift yet durable warships are excellent for boarding actions and coastal patrols.

The trihemiolia is a lighter version of the trireme, with two and a half rows of oars. Developed by the Rhodians, it has been their favoured ship design for centuries and is an ideal pirate hunter, able to keep up with lighter raiding ships.

Raiding Hemiolia - Machimoi Epibatoi Toxotai
A hemiolia is a light and fast raiding ship developed in the 4th century BCE, favoured by pirates but also used by navies as a light patrol ship. It has one and a half rows of oars, making it faster and more powerful than earlier uniremes.

Supply Ship - Supply Crew
These merchant ships can carry vast amounts of supplies, and are the best solution to supply forces operating on land.

A fleet with a supply ship can supply nearby land forces until the fleet runs out of supplies. Supply lines by sea are generally less expensive than those on land.
