Royal Barracks

The training and quartering of elite troops requires the proper surroundings.

After the age of heroes, when fighting had been about individual valour and battles a brawl rather than a planned encounter, armies were organised into disciplined units. With conflicts between the city-states on the rise, and threats from the outside world, the Greeks created the first hoplites around 700BC. These were free citizens, fighting as infantry who provided their own armour and weapons. There was no standard equipment and these soldiers carried shields and armour emblazoned with family symbols handed down over generations. However, the name 'hoplite' derived from the one piece of equipment they did have in common: the hoplon shield. This circular shield was held so as to protect not only the bearer but also the man to his left. As a single mass, hoplites moved in the famous phalanx formation, marching towards the enemy as one solid wall.

Keltohellenikoi Thorakitai
(Celto-Hellenic Infantry)

These shock infantry are Celto-Hellenic 'men-at-arms,' Celtic warriors of a mixed culture. While they are not of especially great station, they are capable warriors fighting in the Celtic manner, in a motley combination of Hellenic and Celtic gear and dress: long Celtic shields, a Greek helmet, a Celtic sword, and javelins. They soften up an opponent with their javelins and charge an enemy once they're weakened with the great force of Celtic warriors.

Massalia has traditionally been a Roman ally. due to the conflict with Carthage for the supremacy in the Western and Northern Mediterranean, and due to the increasing power of the Celtic tribes in Gaul. Many times the Roman army has aided the Massalian army with its infantry which, through discipline and tactics, was able to withstand the Celtic threat.

The use of cavalry in the Massalian army is a necessity. The Celts are able to field a very capable cavalry, frequently leading incursions into Massalian territory. Cavalry of their own is a necessary response until the rest of the Massalian army can be mobilised. This task is handled by the Ephippoi Thorakitai, an elite heavy cavalry unit influenced by Celtic and Roman practices.
