V těchto budovách se mohou měšťané či poddaní cvičit v boji s kopím.

Po věku hrdinů, kdy se v bitvách stavělo především na osobní statečnosti a boji muže proti muži, se začala vojska organizovat mnohem disciplinovaněji. Jelikož konflikty mezi městskými státy byly čím dál častější a hrozba z vnějšího světa reálnější, začali Řekové kolem roku 700 př. n. l. shromažďovat své první hoplitské oddíly. Byli to svobodní měšťané, kteří bojovali jako pěchota a zbroj i zbraně si zaopatřovali sami. Žádné předpisové vybavení tehdy ještě neexistovalo, a tak vojáci nosili štíty a zbroje opatřené rodovými symboly převzatými od předchozích generací. Název „hoplité“ je pak odvozen od jediné součásti výzbroje, kterou měli všichni stejnou: od štítu zvaného hoplon. Tento kruhovitý štít chránil nejen svého nositele, ale i druha po jeho levici. Početné oddíly těchto vojáků se pak pohybovaly ve formaci, jež proslula jako falanga a která proti nepříteli stála jako jednolitá zeď.
