Temple of Malakbel

Malakbel, was one of many solar deities prevalent in ancient religious cults. In the city of Palmyra, he was a part of the trinity that bound him to the Moon God, Aglibol, and Baal, Lord of the Gods, with the former two considered to be servants of the latter. Malakbel was Baal's messenger, which is what his name is believed to mean. Greeks equated him with Hermes, who likewise fulfilled the duties of divine courier. Additionally, he was thought to be a bringer of Spring, who displayed a fondness for plant life and domestic animals. A holy sanctuary within Palmyra, known as 'Sacred Wood' to reflect to honour the power of sun and moon over all mortal life, was dedicated to both Malakbel and Aglibol.
