These late armies were built in the Roman style, as the Armenians began to realize that their previous forces composed mainly of Georgians and Caucasus levies were no longer sustainable as the Roman Empire began to encroach on the Levant and East. It was focused around a defensive infantry line, much like Roman legions were, but with heavier emphasis on their archers and cavalry; the imitation legionaries pin the enemy forces in place while archers rain arrows down on them, their flanks protected by teams of spearmen and heavy shock infantry. Once cavalry superiority is ensured, the Nakharar join the main battle from behind as their lighter-armed companions hunt down any routing forces or skirmishers.

After a disasterous encounter with Seleucid elephants, two units of artillery pieces are typically assigned to these armies, although one is occasionally substituted for supply personnel. These use their extreme range to draw the enemy out, as well as focusing their fire on large targets such as elephants or chariots.

Ultimately, while these tactics were successful for a time, they were unable to gain much from it; the stalemate would continue for decades.
