Gardingi Cavalry

These men can skewer their enemies from a considerable distance.

The Visigoths, then known as the Thurungi, emerged from the Gothic confederation of tribes at around the end of the 4th century AD. Having defeating the Romans at Adrianople, they sacked Rome before moving into the west, eventually settling in France and Spain and becoming foederati of the Empire. Like many of the Migration Period peoples, the Ostrogoths were not a single tribe but rather a confederation of warrior bands united by a single leader. Perhaps the most famous of these was Alaric I, who was responsible for the sack of Rome in AD410. However, his relationship with the Romans was not at all straightforward. Having fought for them in the Balkans, Alaric was appointed Magister Militum for Illyria in AD397. This gave him control of the Illyrian arms factories or fabricae, making it likely that the forces that so successfully attacked Rome used Roman weapons to do it.
