Livre Carolingienne

Every coin adheres to the standard, so its worth cannot be questioned.

Charlemagne made his mark on Europe in almost every way. Shortly after assuming power, he struck his kingdom's currency, the 'livre', for the first time. A livre could be broken down into twenty 'sous' (known in the old Roman Empire as 'solidus'), which in turn consisted of twelve 'deniers' or silver pennies. The gold solidus, however, was a paper accounting unit only (that is, not physically minted, simply used for division), as the Franks adopted the silver standard and the livre itself was equal in weight to a pound of silver. The system was supposed to be standardised throughout the kingdom but a coin's value frequently differed depending on where it was minted. Despite this, the 'Livre Carolingienne', as it was known, and in particular the denier, became the basis of European currency for year to come, up to the modern age in fact, including influencing the development of the English pound and penny.
