The Sassanid Empire, likewise, controlled the Persian Gulf, opening trade with the Far East. Elsewhere, fishing supplemented agriculture, especially in arid coastal regions. In comparison to the dangers of drought and flood that could destroy crops, fish could be relied upon whatever the weather.
