Church Hospital

Those closest to God may sometimes heal through him.

Monasteries very quickly became the centres of education and healthcare in Christian Europe. Having been outstripped in the field of medicine by Muslim contemporaries, Christian monks studied pharmaceuticals and medicine so that they could better serve their communities. They were chiefly concerned with helping the sick become better through the use of herbal remedies, which they grew themselves and also traded with foreign powers for more exotic specimens; the use of hemlock as a painkiller, for instance, was discovered by monks. Monks saw it as their duty, as part of Christian charity, to aid the sick and the dying, and as large sick houses (early hospitals) only existed in bigger cities like Constantinople, they opened the monastery doors to anyone in need. As such, monks were also able to identify illnesses, and stored all their knowledge in compendiums constantly updated with new information and research.
