Master Armourer
"You won't find better armour in Constantinople itself!"As late antiquity progressed, and change seized the Roman Empire, so too did its military alter. The 'lorica segmentata', which was used all the way through the early Imperial period, fell out of use towards the end of the 3rd century AD due to the expense of maintenance, despite its enduring quality. However, scale and lamellar (plate) armour were still in use, and the 'lorica hamata' and 'lorica squamata' became much more prevalent amongst the Legions of the 4th century. However, the dilution of the Roman army with barbarian elements, as well as increased contact with an evolving barbarian enemy, are also seen as the causes of this change in Roman equipment. Some sources suggest that the classic Italic helmet, unchanged for centuries, underwent alterations to better deal with unconventional weapons such as axes and maces. In addition, there was a greater reliance on heavy plate armour and the emergence of new, heavy throwing weapons - such as the plumbata - to better combat this unpredictable enemy.
