Military Camp

The standards must be rested and defended behind solid defences.

The Roman Army would never cease marching to rest without constructing a fortified, entrenched position, known as a 'castrum'. It could take a variety of forms; it could be temporary fortifications used to rest for a short space of time or a more semi-permanent structure used as winter quarters when the army was far from home and required settlement for months at a time ('castrum statica'). A castrum would always take the same basic form, regardless of purpose - essentially becoming a small, fortified town surrounding its central 'forum' and general's tent, or 'praetorium'. Each man had his own place, so that he would know his orders and duty with no delay or confusion. In this way, castra - the plural - were a microcosm of the Roman military model itself - ordered and precise to the last man.
