Some vassals in Outremer owe not only personal military service but are required to provide, 'service de compaignons', a number of men hired as mercenaries for a period of time, and payed for by the vassal himself. Frankish Axemen are usually drawn from pilgrims turned soldiers or from the poorer professional soldiers and hired by vassals unable to hire more expensive troops.
