There are two types of mercenaries in the Byzantine army. Most common are the irregular mercenaries hired for specific periods or campaigns, and secondly are those that are kept on full time. The Alamanoi belong to the former and are made up of Germans and Flemings. Hailing from Northern central Europe, it is not surprising to see these troops armed with mighty Zweihanders.
拜占庭軍中僱傭部隊分為兩類，多數為特殊時期或因作戰需要而臨時僱傭，而少數部隊則長期服役。阿拉瑪諾部隊無疑屬於前者，他們多出身德意志或佛蘭芒，自歐洲北部輾轉來到拜占庭作戰，因此慣用家鄉地區常見的雙手巨劍。
