Tarantine Expatrii Cavalry
Expert mounted skirmishers, excellent for screening the army and harassing enemy formations. As Latin expansion into Magna Graecia showed little sign of abating, many of the wealthier families of Tarento fled to Syracuse, while others crossed the Adriatic to find shelter with their long-time allies in Epirus and Sparta. Even before Pyrrhus' abortive Italian campaign, the ties between the beleaguered polis and Epirus had been strong. Going back to Alexander of Mollosus, the Tarantines put their famed cavalry at the disposal of their allies, and these traditions carried forward even to the time of Epirotic and Illyrian resistance against Roman invasion in the 160s BC. Tarantine expatriates formed the core of the veteran riders called on by Epirote rulers in times of need. These experienced light cavalry riders were even compared favorable to Hannibal Barca's famed Numidian cavalry, though this is likely post-hoc exaggeration by later Roman historians to exaggerate the threat posed to the Republic during Pyrrhus' campaign (Hannibal and his forces remained the bogeyman of Rome for centuries after his defeat and exile at Zama). Nonetheless, it is widely accepted that the Tarentines maintained an unmatched tradition of light-cavalry horsemanship in the Italian peninsula, in stark contrast to Rome's largely uninspiring mounted forces.
