Great Altar of Pergamon
In honour of Zeus, in hope of his continued favour. The sprawling Acropolis at Pergamon was one of its most notable landmarks. Containing sanctuaries to numerous deities, theatres, royal palaces and various entertainment centres, it was a hub of activity for the local and visitor alike. At the foot of its upper part was one of the finest pieces of monumental architecture in the ancient world, the Great Altar of Pergamon. Commissioned by the Attalid king Eumenes II in the 2nd century BC, it is believed to have been dedicated to Zeus, and adorned with frieze bas-reliefs across its facade depicting the Gigantomachy; war between the Gods and Giants. Other friezes depicted the life of Telphus, son of the hero Heracles and the founder of Pergamon.
