Shrine

The power of a god, held within its image.

Shrines generally take the form of small, sequestered spaces containing relics and images around an altar. In the Greek world, they were simple places for worship of the gods and heroes of the age. Often, the site chosen for a shrine was itself considered a place of worship and pilgrimage, but it was also common to find them in public spaces or inside the home. Those shrines dedicated to the gods tended to be more elaborate and grandiose than those intended for the veneration of heroes, which were smaller in scale and built around a simple pit in the ground for offerings.
